What is a gifted student? It is a student who demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative ability(ies), exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation and/or excels in specific academic fields, and who needs special instruction and/or special ancillary services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her abilities. (SBOE Rule 160-4-2-.38, p. 1)
What should gifted students be able to do? A gifted student should be able to exhibit higher levels of creative thinking than their age/grade peers, as well as higher degrees of reading, reasoning, synthesizing, and evaluating abilities; display self confidence by directing their own learning in research activities, competition participation, and added responsibilities; work at an accelerated pace that enriches and extends regular classroom studies to include the special interests of gifted learners.
